A Bean's Journey

An introductory sketch of the process Enneagram

The Enneagram is more than nine personality types. G.I. Gurdjieff taught it as a living map of how any process unfolds: how it begins, gathers what it needs, meets its turning points and comes to completion, ready to begin again.

A bean plant walks that circle in a single season. Each point has three layers: the process, the bean, and the personality type that forms around that stage. It's as if each of us loves one stage of the process so much that it becomes the seed of our personality. We become experts at moving through that stage, and we can get stuck repeating it.

This is an introductory sketch, not the full teaching. Everyone runs all nine patterns. Each of us runs one more than the others.

Three points, 3, 6 and 9, are turning points. Here a process can't continue on its own momentum: something new has to enter, or something has to be given up. In the bean's life, each is a decisive turning: the first root breaks out, the sprout meets the light, and the ripe seeds are released.

Choose a point on the circle to open its three layers: the process, the bean, and the personality type that forms around it.

Every ending is a seed

This was a first sketch of one living process, and of how each personality type forms around one part of it. The fuller teaching brings process and personality together: where you get stuck, where you shine, and how to keep moving around the whole circle, and indeed to spiral upward into evolution.

The Wake Up talks walk the circle point by point, with practical pointers for daily life. They're free.
